Ich liebe Songs, von denen es unterschiedliche Versionen gibt und gerade die Rabenballade ist ein wunderschönes Beispiel für eine solche Geschichte. Wenn auch in allen Versionen der Ritter/Edelmann, etc. tot ist, so gibt es Unterschiede in dem „Trauerverhalten“ der Angehörigen. In dem schottisch-englischen Original, auf dem auch meine Version beruht, kümmert sich niemand um den Verstorbenen, es wird zwar ausgesagt, dass wohl der ein- oder andere um ihn weinen wird, aber dennoch sprechen die Raben davon, dass sie sich ihn wohl gut einverleiben können und auch seine Haare für den Nestbau verwenden können. In vielen deutschsprachigen Versionen wird der Verstorbene bewacht und seine Geliebte weint (meist nicht näher benannt, ob angetraut, etc.) um den Verstorbenen, gräbt diesem ein Grab und stirbt selbst. Nicht unbedingt ein fröhlicheres Schicksal, aber dennoch eine hoffnungsvollere Variante.
Um eine Brücke zwischen diesen beiden Grundversionen zu schlagen, habe ich zu der schottischen Variante eine Strophe hinzugefügt, die dem Hörer nahelegt, seine Nächsten nicht zu verschmähen, um nicht das Schicksal des Verstorbenen zu teilen.

I love songs of which there are multiple versions and especially the ballad of the two (or three) ravens (Rabenballade in german) is a wonderful example. While the knight is dead in all cases there are massive differences in how his relatives are mourning. In the scottish/english original, on which my version is based upon, no one is interested in looking after the knight, there is a mention of some people will be mourning, but the ravens aretalking about how easily they can eat him and use his hair to build their nest. In many german versions the lover (it is not mentioned if married, etc.) of the knight is coming to mourn, digging his grave and is dying upon his grave herself. While that might not be a much happier ending, it still contains more hope.
In order to build a bridge between these two main versions I added anew verse to the scottish version, which suggests to the listener not to reject his relatives, etc., in order not to share the fate of the deceased.
